The National Medical Commission (NMC) has limited the MBBS fees to a maximum of 4.5 years. This instruction was announced through a public notice in April 2026. It applies to all private medical colleges in India that are recognized by the NMC. This rule lowers the overall cost of MBBS for NEET UG 2026 applicants. Many private colleges now charge less than Rs 1 crore in total fees. This includes minority-run colleges and older private medical institutions. Colleges are not allowed to charge fees for the mandatory one-year internship. Instead, interns receive a monthly allowance as per the CRMI Regulations 2021. Colleges that fail to follow this directive may face penalties under the NMC Act 2019.

Private Medical Colleges With Total Fees Under Rs 1 Crore in India

Several private colleges keep the total cost of MBBS under Rs 1 crore. Mostly, these colleges are located in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. The following table gives details of annual and total course fees.

StateCollege or Quota CategoryAnnual Tuition FeeTotal Fee for 4.5 Years
Tamil NaduChristian Medical College Vellore (Minority)Rs 56,330Rs 2.53 lakh
KarnatakaGovernment quota in private collegesRs 1.53 lakhRs 6.89 lakh
KarnatakaPrivate quota in private collegesRs 12 lakhRs 54 lakh
MaharashtraPrivate colleges (lower fee band)Rs 6.2 lakhRs 27.9 lakh
MaharashtraPrivate colleges (upper fee band)Rs 15.6 lakhRs 70.2 lakh

Hostel, mess, and exam charges are managed separately by each college. Candidates should check the official fee notification of each college for specific details.

Fee Structure for Different Seat Quotas

Private medical colleges categorize seats into different fee groups. Government quota seats are the cheapest. Management quota seats are the most expensive within the same college. NRI quota seats often have fees in US dollars in several institutions. Minority-run colleges follow their own fee rules as per state law. NEET UG 2026 rank determines which quota a candidate is eligible for.

Eligibility for MBBS Admission in Private Colleges

Candidates must score the required percentile in NEET UG 2026. The general category needs a 50th percentile. Reserved categories need a 40th percentile. Applicants must be at least 17 years old as of 31 December 2026. They must have passed Class 12 with physics, chemistry, and biology. English is a compulsory subject in most medical colleges.

How to Apply for MBBS in Private Medical Colleges?

Admission to private medical colleges is done through NEET UG counseling. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) handles the all-India Quota rounds. State counseling bodies manage state and private college seats. Deemed universities conduct their own counseling process via the MCC portal. Candidates must first clear NEET UG 2026 with a valid score. State domicile candidates get priority in state quota rounds. Choice filling for seat selection is available on the counseling portal after each round's results are released. Seat allocation is based on merit, category, and preferences. Candidates need to report to the allocated college with all required documents.

Steps for Candidates

  1. Visit nmc.org.in to ensure the chosen college is NMC-recognized.
  2. Register for NEET UG 2026 on neet.nta.nic.in before the deadline.
  3. Track all counseling updates on mcc.nic.in and the relevant state portals.
  4. Compare tuition, hostel, and mess fees before finalizing a college.
  5. Keep the NEET scorecard, ID proof, and category certificate handy for verification.
